About Cessnock: Cessnock was established as a service town for the coal mining industry in the late 19th and early 20th Century. At one time there were dozens of underground mines in the area, today just one. The town has several friendly country pubs along the main street, Vincent Street as well as a large Ex-Serviceman's Club and a thriving Leagues Club - both an easy walk from the Inn. Cessnock has its own newspaper, three large air conditioned shopping centres, an art gallery and new cultural centre, TAFE college and two thriving public schools. The population is around 15,000. About the vineyards: Wine grapes have been grown in the Cessnock area since the early 1800s with several local families establishing vineyards and wineries that are today household names - Tyrrell's, Tullochs, Lindemans, Wyndham Estate, McGuigan and McWilliam's are all highly regarded wineries with their home in the Cessnock area. The vineyards centre on 3 parishes to the north of Cessnock - Pokolbin, Rothbury & Lovedale and also reach into nearby Singleton Shire. Over 100 wine sales outlets are open daily to invite visitors to try before they buy. About the concerts: Over the last 15 years the Hunter Valley has grown in fame not only for wine, for fine food, for a great place for a holiday, but also for music. Each summer sees concerts held in the grounds of picturesque vineyards and world famous artists performing under the stars. 2010 will see Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Whitney Houston, James Taylor and Carol King amongst others as well as the regular opera, jazz, blues and other well established events. |
